6. Around the States - news from the State Councils

Queensland / Northern Territory Council

Welcome to the February edition of the ‘pen’. I expect you are all back in your career mode and well in the implementation often goals and plans you made last year for your 2009 success.

AITD has made some highly popular changes to our divisional operations by supporting ‘free to member’ events and providing members and non members with the chance to see and hear some highly respected presenters within the L&D arena.

Local Events:

Friday February 20 2009: Revitalising Staff Induction Programs

National professional development event featuring Stephen McGarrigle from Dreamworld on the Gold Coast. Many of you would have seen Stephen at our Qld/NT conference last September where he wowed the audience with his exciting and interactive style of presenting what can sometimes be a ‘dry’ topic into one where the audience were so impressed they did not want his session to finish. Don’t miss his session in Brisbane by booking now through the AITD website. An event not to be missed!

Friday March 6 2009: Seaworld Secrets of Learning and Development: SeaWorld Resort Gold Coast

Our first free to member event for 2009. Check details on the website and book online. Places are limited for free options. Non members are welcome to attend at $45 per person. Registration essential. Bus transport available ( free to members) but places must be notified to national office two weeks prior to the event

Regional/ NT members – Where are you? Make your membership work for you!
Your council team are looking forward to hearing from you regarding your thoughts around holding some events in your region and in NT. These events need time for planning so please contact us within the next week with your ideas. It is also a plan to invite your AITD CEO to come and meet you once we get the dates and plans in process. Maybe we can join in with other associations you belong to in your region for the event. Contact qldnt@aitd.com.au

Sydney 21 & 22 April 2009: National Conference

The conference is the highlight of the AITD year and this year, judging from the line up of sessions and presenters looks like being even better this year if that can be possible.

Many of us are going to Sydney for the event so if you are thinking of joining us and need to contact us for conference networking or sharing accommodation please contact council member Kim Forbes who looks after member needs and support. Kim’s email is Kim.Forbes@uchealth.com.au.
Once again, check the website for conference details.

I and the council team look forward to catching up with many of you at our professional development events over the next few months. Don’t forget, events are tax deductable as well!

Thought for the month:

Return on Investment in a Tight Economic Climate

In times of economic downturn organisations are looking for costs to cut and ways of being efficient. All areas of business are required to be accountable for the contribution they are making to the health and often survival of the organisation. Learning and Development is no exception. The need to demonstrate value and a positive return on investment is evident. As professionals in the area of learning and development, we need to be proficient at developing measures of value for every program, including financial value, and present this information in meaningful ways to organisation stakeholders.

In this evening session, we will explore some ways of taking evaluation beyond the wonderful Donald Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels, building on this model with Phillips’ Return on Investment methods.

Betty Sheppard
Director of LEARNING BY DESIGN, Master of Business (UTS); Graduate Diploma in Employment Relations (UTS); Bachelor of Science, Honours (Surrey University, U.K.); Bachelor of Arts (NSW).

7. The industry: Latest news in learning and development

Tasmania leads the nation in e-Learning
In a news release from the Tasmanian government, Acting Premer Lara Giddings has stated that Tasmania is leading the nation in taking up e-learning as a means of delivering education and training.

Ms Giddings said the latest statistics showed 71 per cent of vocational education and training enrolments involve e-learning in Tasmania compared to a national average of 35 per cent. 11 Tasmanian projects had been run in 2008 through the national E-learning Innovations Program and over $250,000 was distributed to registered training organisations and their enterprise and community partners.

“I’m delighted Tasmanians have embraced e-learning at more than twice the rate of other Australians,” Ms Giddings said.

'Getting into Export' Workshops for Corporate Training Businesses & Professionals
Austrade is running a series of free export workshops, designed specifically for corporate training/human resources consultants and business consultancy professionals who would like to source offshore business clients, raise awareness of their services and learn more about opportunities in South East Asia.

Training boom amid jobs doom
An article in WA Today reminds us that there are often silver linings.

It might be an odd time to be looking for work in the once-booming mining industry but training organisations are already looking beyond the bust. As even major miners such as BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto announce mass layoffs, a group trying to train the next generation of resources industry workers, says it wants to ensure that when the good times come round again, companies do not have to scramble for staff.

Training Tip from Dr Rich Allen

Suggest the experience

Some of you may have been on courses where the trainer stands at the front of the room at the start of the course and says, "You are going to have such fun today." And you may have found yourself thinking, "Oh no, I’m not."

Telling people what their experiences are going to be can be dangerous. Often people react against such bald statements in a way that impact adversely on their training experience.

The statement "you are going to have such fun today" is actually fraught with dangerous assumptions. For example, what does the word fun imply in this context? Do the trainer and the participants even share a common definition of that word? If not, is the trainer referring to their definition of fun or what the participants think may be fun? And how does the trainer know that this will be something the group will all experience?

In making this statement, the trainer has actually shared with the participants what she believes the group will experience today. It is fantastic the trainer feels this way, but the words she has chosen may end up working against what she hopes will happen. The potential problem lies in the trainer placing her expectations on the participants. They have been given something to push against

Suppose someone in the group is not enjoying the training experience. He may think back to the statement. Obviously the trainer does not know what she is talking about. If she doesn’t know what she talking about in this situation, what else is she pretending to know? As a result, the trainer’s credibility may begin to diminish in the eyes of the participant.

So for the trainer, it might be more effective if she suggests the experience. This allows them the freedom to create their own responses to the event. She might have said, "Today’s course could turn out to be one of the more enjoyable training experiences you have had in a while."

This suggesting statement tends to plant a suggestion as to how the participants might view the training experience. In many cases it’s better to simply sow the seeds of what might happen rather than pressure the group to meet the trainer’s expectation. Participants are now invited to create their own reaction to the experience, possibly influenced in a positive way by the trainer’s words.

Here are a couple of examples of how to convert a tell format into a suggest format.
"You’ll find this to be an incredibly useful tool."
"You may find this to be a useful tool in certain situations."
"This is the most important idea in the entire course."
"You may find this to be one of the most important ideas in the entire course."

Dr Rich Allen is holding Finding Your Training Style workshops around Australia in 2009 and is keynote at the AITD National Conference ‘Dynamic Presentations: Maximising the Impact of your Message on Individual Learners.
