‘Seconds Count’ Emergency Preparedness Learning Solution – A Case Study of Success
In October 2022, Sydney Trains launched ‘Seconds Count’, an interactive emergency preparedness digital learning initiative, designed to build the confidence of frontline station staff when assessing and responding to an emergency.
Seconds Count saw Sydney Trains being able to close identified capability gaps in emergency response capabilities through an engaging, innovative approach to improving safety on the rail network. The initiative was leader led and supported by multiple gamified interactive videos which enabled frontline employees to practice quick decision making through real-world simulations.
This case study will showcase the multi-award winning Seconds Count learning solution that was also highly commended at the AITD 2023 Excellence Awards, provide insight into Sydney Trains co-design approach to creating learning programs, and offer the chance to learn from the success and improvement opportunities which Sydney Trains are incorporating in future learning programs.
Key Takeaways:
1. There is no excuse for boring mandatory safety training.
2. Learning solutions should focus on improving performance.
3. If you make learning enjoyable, people will ask for more.
