AITD’s research program is a strategic enabler to deliver on our purpose: to advance excellence in learning for a better future. As the peak not-for-profit organisation for L&D professionals in Australia, we use research to shape standards, elevate practitioner voice, and build capability across the profession. Research helps us understand where L&D is now, where it’s heading, and what we must do to stay ahead. It is how we support the profession to adapt, grow, and thrive.

Research conducted by AITD will:

  • Advance the profession by shaping standards and identifying future needs
  • Represent our members by amplifying practitioner voice and experience
  • Strengthen capability through practical, evidence-informed resources
  • Inspire excellence by sharing what works now, and what will work next Through our research, we bring AITD’s values to life: we lead with conviction by choosing bold, future-focused topics; we connect by engaging with our member community; and we share knowledge generously to raise the standard of practice across the profession.

AITD Research Principles

These principles ensure that AITD's research efforts are aligned with our commitment to advancing excellence in learning and development for a better future.

  1. Practitioner-Centric: Our research is grounded in the real-world experiences of L&D practitioners. We prioritise topics that address current challenges and opportunities faced by practitioners, ensuring relevance and applicability.
  2. Evidence-Informed: We integrate robust data and research methodologies with practical insights. Our work is informed by both empirical evidence and the lived experiences of L&D practitioners.
  3. Action-Oriented: Each research output includes clear, actionable takeaways. We provide tools, frameworks, and recommendations that practitioners can readily apply to their practice.
  4. Future-Focused: We anticipate emerging trends and explore innovative practices. Our research aims to prepare the L&D community for future challenges and opportunities, fostering adaptability and resilience.
  5. Inclusive and Accessible: We produce research that is accessible to a diverse audience. Our publications are written in clear, jargon-free language and consider the varied contexts of our members.
  6. Ethical and Independent: Our research upholds the highest standards of integrity and objectivity. We ensure transparency in our methodologies and findings.

We will use fit-for-purpose methods depending, including surveys, focus groups, case studies, capability assessment analysis, expert interviews, and synthesis of international research. Where appropriate, we will also collaborate with academic or industry partners.
