Australia's peak body for learning and development professionals
The Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) is the not-for-profit professional association for people who design, deliver and lead learning in Australian workplaces. Registered as a company on 22 April 1975 and owned by its members, AITD exists to advance excellence in learning for a better future.
Our members include learning and development managers, instructional designers, facilitators and trainers, eLearning specialists, capability and organisational development leads, VET practitioners and assessors, coaches and mentors, and independent consultants. They work across corporate, government, defence, health, education and community settings. See how AITD supports your sector, or read our plain-English guide to what learning and development is.
Our vision and purpose
Vision: advancing excellence in learning for a better future.
Purpose: we promote the learning profession, engage members and communities, inspire growth and build capability.
What we do
- Represent and advocate for the profession. We speak for L&D professionals with government, industry and the research community, including our submission to the Australian Bureau of Statistics on how L&D roles are classified. Read more on What is L&D? and AITD Research.
- Encourage professional standards. We encourage our members to follow the AITD Code of Ethics and Professional Practice and to keep their skills current through continuing professional development, so employers and the community know the standard L&D professionals hold themselves to. The AITD Capability Framework describes what good L&D practice looks like, Career Pathways show where an L&D career can go, and the post-nominals MAITD, AFAITD and FAITD recognise professional standing.
- Build capability. Short courses, in-house training, webinars, mentoring and self-paced courses for members keep practitioners current.
- Connect the community. Six Divisional Councils run local events in every state and territory, and the AITD National Conference brings the profession together each year.
- Recognise excellence. The AITD Excellence Awards celebrate the best learning programs and practitioners in Australia.
- Share knowledge. Training & Development magazine, AITD News and member resources curate the best current thinking in L&D.
Our values and code of ethics
Our values and the standards of conduct we expect of members and staff are set out in the AITD Values and Code of Ethics and Professional Practice (PDF).
Where we've come from
AITD was registered as a company limited by guarantee on 22 April 1975, a not-for-profit professional association owned by its members. Since then, learning at work has moved from the classroom to blended, digital and now AI-enabled practice, and AITD has grown with it into a national institute with six divisions, a national conference, an awards program, a capability framework and a research program that helps shape the future of the profession.
What has not changed is who we are. AITD is still owned by its members, still run with the support of volunteer leaders on our Board and Divisional Councils, and still focused on one thing: helping L&D professionals do their best work.
How we are governed
AITD is a company limited by guarantee, governed by a national Board of Directors elected by members and supported by a small professional team. Our Constitution, By-Laws, Code of Ethics and Professional Practice, Strategic Plan and annual reports are published on our Governance page.
