Public sector L&D teams are being asked to build in-house capability, adopt AI responsibly and support integrity in decision-making, all under public scrutiny. AITD gives you recognised professional standards and a community of peers who understand the context.

L&D in government

AITD members work in federal agencies, state and territory departments, health and social services agencies, and local councils. Many lead capability programs for thousands of staff with small teams and procurement rules to navigate.

What's shaping public sector L&D

  • Building capability in-house. Agencies are investing in the skills of their own people as part of ongoing public sector reform.
  • Responsible AI. Agencies are putting the national policy for the responsible use of AI in government into practice, and staff need the skills and judgement to use AI well.
  • Sound decision-making. Ethics, accountability and good judgement are core public sector capabilities, and learning has a big part to play.
  • Workforce change. An ageing workforce, knowledge transfer and mobility between agencies all need deliberate learning strategies.
  • Local government. Councils deliver compliance and capability across very diverse roles, often with an L&D team of one or two.

Research and insights

Our members consistently publish information in the Training and Development magazine, blogs and contribute to AITD conference, as well as research whitepapers.
