About AITD
What is AITD?
The Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) is Australia's peak body for learning and development professionals. We are a not-for-profit association, registered as a company on 22 April 1975 and owned by our members. We encourage professional standards, advocate for the profession, run courses, webinars and events, publish Training & Development magazine and connect L&D practitioners through six state and territory Divisions. Read more about AITD.
Is AITD a registered training organisation (RTO)?
No. AITD is not an RTO and does not deliver nationally accredited qualifications such as the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Our short courses are professional development for people working in or moving into L&D. Attendees receive a certificate of attendance and a digital badge.
Who can join AITD?
Anyone who works in, studies or supports learning and development can join: L&D managers, instructional designers, facilitators and trainers, eLearning specialists, VET practitioners, coaches, consultants and HR professionals with a learning remit. Our members work across corporate, government, defence, health and community, tertiary education, VET and consulting. See how L&D works in each on the L&D Profession pages. There are Professional, Student, International, Retired and Corporate memberships. See Join AITD and member benefits.
What do MAITD, AFAITD and FAITD mean?
They are AITD post-nominals. MAITD means Member of AITD. AFAITD means Associate Fellow and FAITD means Fellow, both awarded to experienced practitioners who apply and are assessed against our criteria. You may use a post-nominal only while your membership is current. Find out how to become an Associate Fellow or a Fellow.
How is AITD governed?
AITD is a company limited by guarantee governed by a national Board of Directors made up of one member from each of our six Divisions and up to four co-opted directors, supported by six Divisional Councils that run local activities. Our Constitution, By-Laws, Code of Ethics and Professional Practice, Strategic Plan and annual reports are on the Governance page.
How do I get involved with my local Divisional Council?
Nominations and elections for Divisional Councils are held between June and August each year for one-year terms. You need to be a financial member to stand, and you can nominate yourself. If a council has a vacancy during the year you can ask to be seconded outside the election process. Find your council and what is involved on the Divisional Councils page.
How do I contact AITD?
Use the contact form or call +61 (0)2 9211 9414 and our team will direct your enquiry to the right person, whether it is about membership, courses, events or invoices.
Membership
How much does AITD membership cost?
Current fees for each membership type are listed on the Join AITD page. AITD is a not-for-profit, so fees are set to cover the services members receive. Membership runs for 12 months from the date you join or renew and includes self-paced courses, webinars, member rates on courses and the conference, Training & Development magazine and more. See the full list of member benefits.
How do I renew my membership?
We send renewal notices before your membership expires, so please keep your contact details current. The renewal email explains how to pay. If your fee is still unpaid after the expiry date your membership lapses and access to member benefits, member pricing and member-only content stops. If you have not received a renewal email, use the contact form to let us know.
Can I pay my membership monthly or quarterly?
Membership is an annual fee. If you would prefer to be billed monthly, ask us through the contact form and we will set that up. Automated monthly card payments are not available at the moment.
Can I cancel my membership and get a refund?
You can cancel your membership in writing at any time, but refunds are not provided for the unused part of a membership year, for either individual or corporate members. Individual memberships cannot be transferred to another person.
What happens to my post-nominals if my membership lapses?
The right to use MAITD, AFAITD or FAITD ends as soon as your membership lapses, is cancelled or is suspended, and you need to remove it from your email signature, LinkedIn profile and other professional materials. Members who let their membership lapse may need to reapply, and continuity of membership for designations is not guaranteed, so it is worth renewing on time.
How do I update my contact details?
Sign in to My Account on the website and update your details there, or send the changes through the contact form and we will update them for you.
How do I become a Fellow or Associate Fellow?
Fellow (FAITD) and Associate Fellow (AFAITD) recognise experienced practitioners who meet our criteria. Applications are completed online and ask for the contact details of two referees. Read the criteria and apply on the Associate Fellow or Fellow page.
My organisation is a corporate member. Do I get member rates?
Corporate membership covers the individuals named on the membership (a minimum of five), not the whole organisation. If your name is listed under your organisation's corporate membership you receive all member benefits, including member rates. Corporate members can transfer a place to another employee who meets the membership criteria. To check whether you are covered, or to add people, ask our membership team through the contact form or read about corporate membership.
Courses and professional development
How do I book an AITD course?
Go to All courses, open the course you want and choose a date to register. Each course page explains what you will learn and who it suits. Courses are paid for in advance, either when you book or within seven days of your invoice. If your organisation cannot pay before the course, give us a valid purchase order number when you register. You will receive confirmation within five working days of payment. Early-bird and discounted fees must be paid by the offer's expiry date or standard pricing applies.
Can I attend a course if I am not a member?
Yes. AITD courses are open to everyone. Members save up to 20 per cent on the standard price, and the saving on a couple of courses can cover much of the membership fee, so it is worth joining first if you plan to take more than one course this year.
Can AITD run a course in-house for my team?
Yes. Any AITD course can be delivered in-house for your organisation, tailored to your context. See in-house courses or tell us what you need through the contact form.
Will I receive a certificate or digital badge after a course?
Yes, both. After you complete the course, the course coordinator emails you a certificate, and you receive an invitation from Credly to claim your AITD digital badge for the course. Read more about AITD digital badges.
What is an AITD digital badge?
An AITD digital badge is a verifiable micro-credential issued through Credly that represents a course, skill, achievement or professional status. Behind the badge image is information about who issued it, what you achieved, the criteria you met and when it was awarded, so employers, clients and colleagues can verify it online. AITD has issued digital badges since 2015 for courses, membership levels, the annual CPD badge, mentoring, Divisional Council and Board service and the Excellence Awards. See Digital Badges.
How do I claim my digital badge?
When you become eligible, Credly emails you an invitation. Follow the link, create or sign in to a free Credly account using the same email address, and accept the badge. It then appears on your Credly profile, where you can set it to public or private. If the invitation has not arrived within a week of completing your course, check your junk folder and then let us know through the contact form.
Where can I share my digital badge?
From your Credly profile you can share a badge to several places:
- LinkedIn: add it to the Licenses and Certifications section of your profile, or share it as a post.
- CV or résumé: include the badge's unique Credly verification link.
- Email signature or website: embed the badge image linked to your Credly profile.
Anyone who follows the link sees the issuer, the achievement and the criteria, so the badge can be verified without contacting AITD.
I booked a course but can no longer attend. What are my options?
Cancellation and transfer requests must be made in writing through the contact form. What is available depends on the notice you give before the course:
- Ten or more working days' notice: transfer to another date at no charge (later transfers attract an administration fee), or a refund less a 20 per cent administration fee, or a credit note for the full amount valid for eight months.
- Less than ten working days' notice: no refund, but you can transfer to another date for a 20 per cent administration fee.
- On the day or non-attendance: no refund. If you are ill, you can request a transfer or an eight-month credit note by providing a medical certificate from an AHPRA-registered practitioner within five working days. For other same-day reasons you can request a transfer for a 20 per cent fee within 24 hours of the start time.
Any unpaid invoice remains payable. The full policy is in our terms and conditions.
Can someone else take my place on a course?
Yes. You can transfer your registration to a substitute attendee at any time before the course starts, provided the fee has been paid. There is no transfer charge, apart from the price difference if a non-member replaces a member. Registrations cannot be transferred once the course has started. Send the new attendee's details through the contact form.
What happens if AITD changes or cancels a course?
We occasionally need to change a date, facilitator or format. If AITD cancels a course you can choose a full refund, a credit note or a transfer to a future course. If circumstances beyond our control stop a face-to-face course going ahead, we may postpone it or run it virtually, and if that does not suit you, you can transfer your place to a colleague or receive a credit note valid for 12 months. AITD cannot cover travel or accommodation costs.
I missed out on a course date. Can I join a waiting list?
New course dates are added throughout the year. Check the course list or ask through the contact form to be told when the next date is released.
Does AITD offer self-paced online courses?
Yes. Self-paced courses are included in AITD membership and can be completed in your own time. Non-members can buy them individually. See member benefits for what is currently available.
How do I join the mentoring program?
The ANZ mentoring program is open to AITD and NZATD members and runs each year from February to November on the Mentorloop platform. Registrations close at the end of July each year, and the earlier you register the sooner you are matched. There is a registration fee for mentees (currently $330 plus GST) and no fee for mentors. You need to hold a current membership for the whole program, so renew if your membership falls due during the year. Dates, fees and registration are on the Mentoring Program page; NZATD members register by contacting our programs team.
Events, conference and webinars
How do I register for a local event?
Browse local events run by your Divisional Council and register online from the event page. The same payment and cancellation terms apply as for courses. If you have a question about an event, use the contact form.
Can non-members attend AITD webinars?
Yes. Webinars are included in membership, and non-members can register for a fee. Upcoming and recorded webinars are listed on the Webinars page.
Do the course cancellation terms apply to the National Conference?
No. The AITD National Conference and the Excellence Awards have their own terms and conditions, which are published on the terms and conditions page and on the conference registration site.
Will I be photographed or recorded at an AITD event?
AITD may photograph, film or record courses, webinars and events for educational and promotional use. If you prefer not to appear, tell the organiser before or at the start of the event. Attendees may not record, screen-capture or use automated transcription or AI note-taking tools during an AITD event without permission.
How do I apply to speak at the AITD National Conference?
AITD calls for speaker applications by email and social media, and the application form is published on the website while applications are open. The conference committee selects speakers to fit the program. See Speak at AITD Conference 2027.
How do I apply to present a webinar?
If you have an idea for a webinar, send a short outline of the topic and your experience through the contact form.
How do I enter or judge the AITD Excellence Awards?
Entries and judging applications open each year. See how to apply and how to become a judge on the Excellence Awards pages.
Payments and invoices
Are AITD prices GST inclusive?
No. Prices on the website are GST exclusive unless stated otherwise, and GST is added to quotes and invoices.
When do I need to pay my invoice?
Courses, webinars, mentoring and local events are paid in advance, at the time of booking or within seven days of the invoice being issued. You can pay by credit card online or by direct deposit using the bank details on your invoice, quoting the invoice number as the reference.
How long is a credit note valid?
A credit note issued when you cancel with at least ten working days' notice, or for a medical exemption, is valid for eight months. A credit note issued because AITD postponed an event is valid for 12 months. Any course booked with a credit note is subject to the normal cancellation terms.
Do you offer discounts for not-for-profit organisations?
There are no specific not-for-profit discounts. Members pay less for courses, webinars and the conference, and corporate membership can be the most economical option for a team. If you are experiencing financial hardship, contact us to discuss your options.
Can I get a refund if I cancel a course?
Refunds are available with written notice at least ten working days before the course, less a 20 per cent administration fee. With less notice there is no refund, but you can transfer to another date for a 20 per cent fee or send a colleague in your place. See the full cancellation options under Courses above and in our terms and conditions.
